Local Experience - Local Knowledge - Local Support
Governor led support

The education system and our schools could not exist without the dedication, time and effort of every single volunteer governor both locally and nationally.

At any one time East Sussex has approximately 1600 -1800 governors across the county often working in isolation and often struggling to grapple with the increasing demand on time, knowledge and experience.

Working collectively this group of volunteers would represent an impressive network, meeting either physically or virtually, to exchange ideas and experience whilst supporting each other through challenging times and developing partnership arrangements whether in a federation or a Multi Academy Trust.

Whilst Education Improvement Partnerships (EIPs) are having a positive impact on school improvement they have taken a while to establish and for schools to trust in each other. This experience has shown us that if you are to establish effective governor led partnerships it is essential that we start developing opportunities for governors to build trust now.

We are committed to supporting governors in achieving the shared goal of outstanding education for all children in East Sussex and believe by working together we can build on and strengthen existing governor led partnerships to further develop outstanding governance in the future.

Local Area Forums

A school to school approach, combined with the increased focus on school governance, will require governing boards to consider how all governors can work collectively across the wider "governor community".

The forums are designed to inform and update governors on current local and national issues through high quality presentations that facilitate discussion and information sharing among peers whilst providing the opportunity share best practice, to discuss and debate current topics, network and meet local contacts.

Held three times per academic year the forums are jointly facilitated with the team and your local member/s of the East Sussex Governors Forum (ESGF).

National Leaders of Governance

National Leaders of Governance (NLGs) are experienced chairs of governors (CoG) who support new or nearly new chairs of governors and their governing boards in other schools.

The Department for Education initiative began in 2012 and is one element of the government's plan to give schools a central role in developing a self-improving and sustainable school-led system.    ► Read more

Local Support Governor Programme

To further build capacity and to provide a co-ordinated approach to sharing individual governor skills, knowledge and experience East Sussex Govenror and Clerking Service deliver a Local Support Governor programme.

The aim of the programme is to provide a formal approach for governor led support, providing the framework within which:

  • Governor led support and local networking can flourish
  • Local Support Governors can be better supported and developed
  • Governor development pathways can be established
We are committed to creating and maintaining a cadre of high quality and skilled Local Support Governors who will work alongside National Leaders of Governance and the East Sussex Governor and Clerking Service, to provide additional capacity and help broker local governor networks.

We have identified the following key functions for the Local Support Governor role and invite applications to support an individual function or a combination of functions:

  1. To support another governing board or the local authority by sitting on a panel, including: complaints panel, disciplinary panels, pay panels
  2. To be appointed or seconded as an additional governor
  3. To be appointed or seconded as a chair or vice-chair
  4. To share expertise on specific issues through providing case studies and/or advice to individual governors
  5. To help facilitate link governor networking in order to promote the sharing of experience, best practice and expertise

Please note: the application form enables you to apply for a single function; you do not have to apply for all five.
