East Sussex Governors Forum (ESGF)

The East Sussex Governors Forum (ESGF) is a corporate, independent body, affiliated to the National Governors' Association (NGA) to act as a vehicle for expressing the collective views of governors and to make appropriate representation to the Local Authority Children's Services, the NGA and other bodies as appropriate.

ESGF is non-party political and non-sectarian. Members of ESGF foster good practice amongst East Sussex governing boards, exchange ideas within the county and also act as a consultative body over policy formation for the County Council and other organisations.

What does the ESGF do?

ESGF meets 3 times per year, prior to meeting with elected members at the County Forum.

The main objectives of these meetings are to discuss:

  • Local and national policy change
  • Issues raised by governors
  • Consultation and constructive challenge on the development of school policies by the Local Authority
  • Feedback from the ESGF session at the Local Area Forums
  • To agree content of the Local Area Forums.

Members of ESGF then take any issues raised through to County Forum to discuss with County Councillors and Senior Officers of East Sussex County Council.

ESGF Representatives attend governor Local Area Forums, in some areas chairing that meeting. At the end of the presentations and discussion, members of ESGF meet with the governor community to discuss any issues they may have, look at the Hot Topic question and offer advice and guidance.

Role of the ESGF members

Members are expected to:

  • Attend their Local Area Forum. Meetings take place 3 times per year.
  • Be the governor representative of their Education Improvement Partnership (EIP)
  • Attend ESGF and County Forum 3 times per year..
  • Foster good practice and communication amongst the East Sussex governor community.
  • Provide challenge to the Local Authority on the development of policies and practices and act as a response group for the purpose of consultation on key issues.
  • Offer assistance to governors dealing with difficult issues or circumstances.
  • Make appropriate representation to the NGA through regional and national conferences and exchange ideas and information.
